Blog 77: The Promises of God

Hello GYB Community. Happy Word Wednesday! My name is Tre Bingham, and today I’ll be talking about the promises of God and why they are important.

God gives us many promises found in the Bible. For example, in 1 John: 1:9, God promises us that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Philippians 4:19 states “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Lastly, Joshua 1:9 states “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

The reason these promises are important and that you should memorize them is because when times get tough, you can remember and be reassured that God is bigger than your problems. Another reason we should make it our goal to know God’s promises is so that we never forget that God always keeps His promises. Someone who forgot God’s promises was Abraham. In Genesis 17:4, God makes a covenant with Abraham and promises him that he “shall be a father of many nations.”

Unfortunately, since Abraham was 99 years old and his wife Sarah was barren, Abraham did not think it would happen. So, he and Sarah decided that Abraham would have a baby with another woman by the name of Hager. That baby was named Ishmael. Although they had Ishmael, this childbirth caused tension between Sarah and Hagar. Eventually, Ishmael and Hagar were banished. In due time, God did indeed give Abraham a son whom he named Issac.

This story teaches us many lessons. The first lesson we can learn is that God always keeps His promise even when it looks impossible. A second lesson is that when you don’t wait on the Lord it causes problems that probably could have been avoided. A third lesson is that we should always walk in faith even when there are many unknowns.

One of my favorite promises of God is the scripture that reminds me that God has a plan for my life found in Jeramiah 29:11. God says, “ For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and hope.” The reason why this scripture is my favorite is because even when things look bleak the Lord always has a plan and purpose for me.

In conclusion, if you don’t remember anything else I put here remember this, God loves you and will never forsake His promises or forget about His plan for you. Goodbye GYB community and I hope to be back soon.

Sincerely, Charlie “Tre” Bingham III
